They fizz, bubble, and smell oh so good. You can get them in just about any scent or color with a variety of essential oils to soothe your skin, relieve pain or boost energy. What if you could make your own? Oh now that is an idea! With just a few ingredients you will have what you need to creatively whip up your own.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- 1 cup baking soda
- 1 cup citric acid
- ½ cup cornstarch
- ½ cup melted coconut oil
- 5-10 drops of essential oils
- Silicone or plastic molds
- 4-6 Sandwich bags or solo cups (optional)
- Food coloring (optional)
- Kitchen scale (optional)
- Combine the baking soda, citric acid, and cornstarch in a medium bowl and mix with a whisk. If you’d like to use more than one color or essential oil to make multiple bath bombs, you can use a kitchen scale to separate the combined mixture evenly in sandwich bags or solo cups.
Tip: Choose a color and essential oil for one side of your mold and a different one for the other. It’s fun to see the color change after placing it in water!
- Add food coloring to the dry ingredients. Start adding just a few drops and continue until you have your desired color.

- Combine the coconut and essential oil(s) in new solo cups/sandwich bags based on how many bath bombs you are making. You can use a kitchen scale to add an even amount to each container. While stirring, gradually add these to the container(s) with dry ingredients. If you pour too quickly, the liquid will create a reaction with the citric acid.
- Use your hands to knead everything together inside of the container(s) until your ingredients start to clump together.
- Scoop the mixture into the mold that you’ll be using and pack it tightly. After letting your bath bombs dry for at least 24 hours, they will be ready to use! Enjoy!
