Be Better than You

The grass is greener on the other side. We hear it all the time and the imagery that this metaphor paints is a picture of one lawn that is more visually appealing than the other. It is a comparison of what something is, and what it could be; a common phrase for discontentment. Truth is, the grass is simply not always greener on the other side. It’s greener where you water it.

It’s easy to look at the success of people around you and feel that everything seems to be working out for them, but not for you. Every person is fighting a battle that you know nothing about. You might think you understand someone, but you could never fully comprehend how they feel unless you lived their life.

The problem with looking at everyone around us, is that we fail to appreciate our own strengths. When we focus on comparison, we discredit our own success. The only person to compare yourself with, is you. If we focus on becoming better than we were yesterday, then we will grow, and our progress will fuel us to keep moving forward.

You may think the grass is greener on the other side, but if you take the time to water your own grass it would be just as green. Unknown

Be happy for the success of those around you, and you can join in on their excitement with them too. You’ll be able to focus on appreciating others for what makes them different, rather than competing at what makes you the same.

When you feel like other people are winning at life, remember that they are working through their own struggles and insecurities. The best thing that you can do is to simply be happy for their wins, and realize that you would want the very same.
